Nicholas Emmanuel "Manolentis," Grandfather Gregory's grandfather, is born on the island of Moskhos or Moskhonisos, the largest of the Moskhonisia , a group of small islands tucked between the island of Lesvos and the coast of Asia Minor , off present-day Ayvalik. His father was a fisherman with his own kaiki (a name describing many types of traditional Greek wooden sailing vessels). Nicholas worked with him and later became a sea-pilot. At some point Nicholas built his own kaiki (possibly a perama) and became involved in smuggling contraband cargoes of tobacco from Greece to Asia Minor.
