On
October 5, Gregory
Constantine Emmanuel "Nisiotis" , my
grandfather , is born
on the island of Tenedos , Ottoman Empire (now
Turkey). He is the seventh of eight
children, the son of
Constantine Emmanuel "Nisiotis" and Eleni
Paleologou .
1877
Evgenia
Emmanuel, eighth child of Constantine Emmanuel "Nisiotis"
and Eleni
Paleologou and Grandfather Gregory's youngest sister, is born on Tenedos.
1882
The
Grand National
Academy , a famous Greek school
founded in the late 1400s in
Constantinople (now Istanbul), relocates to its new building. Today it still
functions in the same building.
1884
The German
explorer, Carl Peters, negotiates concessions from various chiefs of areas on the East
African coast, signaling the beginning
of the German colonization of East Africa .
The German government takes control of Deutsch-Ostafrika from the German East Africa Trading
Company in 1891.
1888
The Abushiri rebellion
against the Germans in Deutsch-Ostafrika begins.
1892
The Hehe rebellion against
the Germans in Deutsch-Ostafrika begins. Sisal
(Agave sisalana), is introduced to Deutsch-Ostafrika from Mexico. By another
account it was introduced by Richard Hindhorf, a German agronomist, from
Florida.
1893
On
17 September 1893, Constantine Emmanuel "Nisiotis"
(b.1829), Grandfather
Gregory's father, passes away on Tenedos. 105 years later his
grandchildren Dimitris and Eleni discover the marble headstone
from his grave.
1894
Grandfather Gregory graduates
from the National Grand Academy
in Istanbul.
1895
Grandfather
Gregory signs his French-Greek dictionary
using the family nickname Nisiotis
(misspelling it in French), which in Greek means islander. This nickname
was probably used until the early 1900s.
1896
Irini
D. Perrou, future wife of Grandfather Gregory, is born on Tenedos. Work
begins on the construction of the Tanga to Moshi railway line
in Deutsch-Ostafrika. The first
modern Olympic games are held in the summer, in Athens .
