1905

The Maji-Maji rebellion against the German colonial government begins, in the southern part of Deutsch-Ostafrika.

 

19    

Grandfather Gregory leaves Tenedos. He sails on the family's ship, the Agia Trias (Holy Trinity), to Romania's Black Sea coast, where he spends some months setting up a taverna and selling his cargo of wine; goes to Alexandria, Egypt as an engineer for the Suez Canal ; moves to Voi, British East Africa; and, two years later, moves to Moshi, Deutsch-Ostafrika . He hauls cargo between Voi and Moshi , and contracts to plough fields with Tinga-Tinga , a steam traction engine (or road locomotive) . Kilimanjaro and its surrounding forest are declared a game reserve by the German colonial government.

 

1912

The railway line from the coast at Tanga reaches Moshi. The original station building exists in fine shape and still serves as Moshi's railway station .

 

1914

Nicholas Emmanuel (b.1855), Grandfather Gregory's brother, passes away.

 

1915

Afroditi Emmanuel (b.1866), Grandfather's sister, passes away. Dwa Estate is established in British East Africa (a part of which later became Kenya), by the Henry Portlock East Africa, Ltd. Company.

 

1918

Germany is defeated in WW I and Deutsch-Ostafrika is taken over by the British.

 

1919

Following the Treaty of Versailles, Britain receives a League of Nations mandate to administer Tanganyika Territory (former Deutsch-Ostafrika). Grandfather Gregory works as a subcontractor on the Dar-es-Salaam to Kigoma (on Lake Tanganyika) railway line

 

1920

Grandfather Gregory purchases the farms Lambo and Chombo, near Moshi , Tanganyika. He builds a house at Chombo and visits Tenedos, where on September 9 he marries my grandmother, Irini D. Perrou .

 

1922

After initial successes , Greece is defeated by Turkey during the Asia Minor campaign. Eleni G. Emmanuel , my aunt, daughter of Gregory and Irini Emmanuel, is born at Moshi, Tanganyika.

 

1923

The Ottoman Empire collapses, the sultanate is abolished, and Turkey is declared a republic. Tenedos is ceded to Turkey (in the Treaty of Lausane) and renamed Bozcaada. The Gregorian calendar is implemented, bringing Greece in line with the rest of Europe and the western world. Constantine (Costas) G. Emmanuel , my father, son of Gregory and Irini Emmanuel, is born on April 4 at Moshi, Tanganyika . He is christened at the Agia Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Mission, on October 21.

 

1924

Dimitri G. Emmanuel , my uncle, son of Gregory and Irini Emmanuel, is born at Moshi, Tanganyika.
